Is japanese angelica tree invasive?
Japanese angelica tree is an ornamental plant often cultivated to provide shade with its large leaves. However, if it escapes into the wild it can shade out other plants, and due to multiple methods of seed dispersal and its adaptability, japanese angelica tree can have a detrimental effect on the local ecosystem. Although japanese angelica tree usually grows up to around 12 m tall, it has been known to reach 17 m in the wild. It has very large leaves that can grow up to 60 cm long, and feature numerous leaflets. Japanese angelica tree thrives in deep, loamy soils and partial shade, but can also tolerate poor soils and full sun. In spring, japanese angelica tree produces vibrant yellow flowers in clusters which later become paper-like pods. The pods change colour from bright red to brown as they mature. Each pod holds six seeds which are dispersed by wind and birds. The plant can also spread vegetatively, via suckers.
