Is aquatic Milkweed poisonous to pets?
Whether fresh or dried, aquatic Milkweed is highly toxic to cats, dogs, and horses. Ingestion of 0.1 to 0.5 percent of their weight may result in death. Horses are more likely to be poisoned by mistakenly eating the plant in hunger than cats and dogs who bite it just of curiosity. All parts of the plant contain cardiotoxins or neurotoxins, and it has a paralyzing effect on the heart and nervous system. With poisoning, animals may show symptoms of diarrhea, weakness, abnormal heart rate, epilepsy, and in severe cases, even death. Avoid your horse from consuming this plant due to excessive hunger and keep your pets away from it. If ingested, contact your veterinarian immediately or take it to the vet.
