Home > Question
Is hoary alyssum poisonous to pets?
While the hoary alyssum is not harmful when consumed by dogs, cats, and other small animals, all parts of both the fresh and dried plant are highly toxic when ingested by horses. Some horses end up consuming this plant when foraging, but most poisoning cases occur when the hoary alyssum finds its way into the hay that horses eat. Poisoning symptoms develop 12 to 24 hours after the plant has been consumed, and begin with severely swollen legs, stiffness, laminitis, and lameness. The plant can also cause severe diarrhea, which, if left to continue, can lead to dehydration, and even death. Any horses with symptoms of a hoary alyssum poisoning need to be taken off their pasture or hay immediately, and seen by a vet. If treatment is given early, most horses will easily recover. Care needs to be taken to ensure that hay fed in the future does not contain any hoary alyssum, and pastures should always be mowed or treated with a herbicide to stop the plant from spreading.
