Why is it called nodding thistle?
The plant bears showy red-purple flowers with the large globose flower heads, containing hundreds of tiny individual flowers, sprout at the tips of stems. The flower heads commonly droop to a 90 degree or 120-degree angle from the stem when it matures, hence its common name is nodding thistle.
