Is madagascar periwinkle poisonous?
All parts of the madagascar periwinkle plant contains a group of chemical compounds known as vinca alkaloids. When these are consumed, they interfere with the development of blood vessels in the body, leading to symptoms that range from mild stomach cramps to cardiac complications, liver damage and systematic paralysis. In severe cases, if extremely large quantities of the plant is consumed, madagascar periwinkle poisoning can be fatal. Although the plant itself is safe to handle, care should still be taken to wash hands afterwards, since the toxins from its milky sap could have flowed onto your skin.
