Is devil's trumpet poisonous?
Devil's trumpet is one of the most toxic plants found in the USA. The plant contains up to 64 alkaloids, from which the main toxic compounds are atropine and scopolamine. Toxins are produced in all parts of the plant, and if consumed in higher amounts, it can have fatal anticholinergic effects. This means that devil's trumpet blocks acetylcholine receptors in the nerves, which inhibits nerve and muscle reactions throughout the body . Devil's trumpet is also used as a potent hallucinogenic drug. It induces anticholinergic delirium, which usually involves an inability to differentiate reality from fantasy. However, alkaloids often have very adverse effects like hyperthermia, tachycardia, and dilated pupils with painful photophobia which can last several days.
