How often should yellow pitcherplant be watered?
The soil should be permanently moist; don't let it dry out. This is especially important if you are in an area with seasonal droughts. A good method to keep the soil moist is to slowly soak the soil using a soaker hose. If you use a regular hose, reduce water pressure to avoid damage to the plant.
In any case, pots with drain holes are strongly recommended. Water flowing through the drain holes can flush any mineral build-up from heavy water. It is good to periodically flood and flush the plant, as the escaping water will remove any deposits that might have accumulated in toxic levels.
You need to use the right type of water. Yellow pitcherplant requires acidic water, so the frequent use of alkaline or neutral water may kill your plant. Rainwater is the most widely accessible source of acidic water, but be aware of air pollution in your area. You should avoid tap water, but may be able to use it if you have very soft tap water. Hard water must be avoided as yellow pitcherplant developed in areas with poor soil, and the amounts of minerals found in tap water might kill it.
It is very important to keep your soil fully saturated with water every day, especially during the growing period, from early spring to mid-fall. Yellow pitcherplant can stop producing pitchers if the air humidity falls below 50%. However, if there is enough water to keep the soil saturated, misting or spraying water is not necessary.
During the dormant period (over the winter), the watering regime should be significantly reduced to prevent root rot, for its growth will slow in winter, consuming less water. This means that during the winter, the soil should be moist, but not as water-saturated as during spring or summer. If growing outdoors, only water the soil when the temperature is above freezing.
