Adoption in Japan: Migrating Across Cultures
As Buddhism spread from China to Japan around the 6th century, so did the art of penjing, which adapted to its new home, integrating with the local aesthetics and fetching itself a Japanese appellation - 'bonsai'. This term melds two concepts: 'bon', a tray-like pot, and 'sai', translates as 'planting'. Combining these together gives us 'bonsai', the act of growing a miniature tree inside a pot, reflecting the Japanese cultural value of harmony between spirit and nature.
