Blackwood is a fast-growing upright tree that can reach a height of 40 feet (12 meters) or more with an approximate width of 20 feet (6 meters). Its dark gray bark is distinguished by vertical fissures. The tree has mid-green, leaf-like phyllodes that measure 3 to 5 inches (7.5 to 12.5 centimeters) in length and about an inch (2.5 centimeters) in width, with one margin being straight and the other slightly curved. Small creamy-white flowers bloom in ball-like clusters, followed by thin, curling seed pods. This tree thrives in full sun to light shade and requires well-drained soil. It is hardy to 15-20 degrees Fahrenheit (-9 to -6 degrees Celsius) and demonstrates a high tolerance for heat and coastal conditions.
