Virginia threeseed mercury is an annual herbaceous weed with distinctive features that support identification. It grows up to 3 feet (90 cm) in height and possesses alternate, toothed leaves that may contain hints of red. The foliage, unlike many of its relatives in the spurge family, does not produce a milky sap when stems are broken. Small, greenish flowers emerge without petals, and the plant develops clusters of insignificant fruit. It possesses a sturdy taproot anchoring it to the ground.
