Cabbage on a stick (Brighamia insignis) creates cabbage-like leaves and small, five-petaled flowers. It is noted for its delightful scent, which is said to resemble citrus or honeysuckle. Like so many native Hawaiian species, the cabbage on a stick is now considered critically endangered.
Pua ʻala reaches a height of 1 to 5 m and has a succulent, trunk-like stem that tapers from the base. The oval-shaped leaves are 6 to 22 cm long and 1 to 15 cm wide and form a rosette on the top of the plant. Each inflorescence contains three to eight trumpet-shaped white flowers.
