Needle vine is a succulent shrub usually observed between 2 to 3 feet (60 to 90 cm) tall with a potential height up to 4 feet (120 cm). Its vertical pale gray-green stems are thick, smooth, and display distinct constrictions at intervals of approximately 2 to 4 inches (5 to 10 cm), creating a jointed appearance. Paired narrow leaves, around 2 inches (5 cm) in length, adorn the nodes but shed during the dormant period, from mid-spring to fall. Pale yellow, inch-long (2.5 cm) tubular flowers with five recurved petal lobes emerge in fall and winter, resembling lanterns held upright near the stem tips. These flowers evolve into horn-shaped, paired capsules upon fruiting. Cold hardy to about 25 °F (-4 °C), needle vine thrives in full to partial sunlight and very well-drained soils.
