Butterfly pea are revered as holy flowers in India and are utilized in everyday puja rituals. The flowers of this vine are shaped like human female genitals, hence the Latin name. This plant’s pods and leaves are eaten as vegetables, while the flowers are used as an organic food dye and in Ayurvedic medicine in Southeast Asia.

Atlantic pigeon wings (Clitoria mariana) is a plant with purple blooms that look kind of like mouse ears. Another name for it is butterfly pea. And, in fact, it attracts butterflies in droves. Butterfly larvae also feast on atlantic pigeon wings, including those of the hoary edge, cloudywing, and long-tailed skipper varieties.

Clitoria javitensis var. portobellensis is a distinct varietal recognized for blossoms resembling a human female's genitalia, hence its name. It exhibits a vibrant hue, typically a deep blue or purple, and a unique, folded petal structure. Originating in a tropical habitat, clitoria javitensis var. portobellensis thrives in warm, moist conditions, often in well-drained soil. Its striking flowers and relative rarity make it a botanical curiosity.
