How to Grow and Care for Giant Coreopsis

Giant Coreopsis

Giant Coreopsis is a drought-tolerant perennial that thrives in full sun and well-draining soil, making its care relatively easy. Special care points include minimal watering needs, only requiring water once the topsoil is dry, and the importance of avoiding waterlogged conditions which can lead to root rot. Pruning in late winter encourages bushier growth and removes any frost-damaged stems.

Giant Coreopsis is a herbaceous subshrub/perennial with a thick, woody trunk reaching heights of 3 to 6 feet (91 to 183 cm). It features a stout gray-brown stem, approximately 2 to 4 inches (5 to 10 cm) thick, stripped of leaves in the summer. Bright green, deeply lobed, pinnatifid leaves emerge in the winter. The plant is crowned with large, showy yellow daisy-like flowers spanning about 3 inches (7.6 cm) across, blooming from late winter to late spring. The stems remain as sculptural elements after foliage dries up.
