Common hazel is distinguished by its deciduous, broad rounded leaves with double-serrate edges, spanning about 2.5 to 5 inches in width (6-13 cm). The plant bears separate male and female flowers; the males are elongated catkins, and the females are small and largely concealed in the bracts that will develop into a leafy covering for the nuts. Its fruit, encased in a fringed husk, is roughly spherical, about 0.5 to 1 inch in diameter (1.25-2.5 cm). Common hazel's bark is smooth and silvery-gray when young, becoming fissured with age.
