Common hazel is distinguished by its deciduous, broad rounded leaves with double-serrate edges, spanning about 2.5 to 5 inches in width (6-13 cm). The plant bears separate male and female flowers; the males are elongated catkins, and the females are small and largely concealed in the bracts that will develop into a leafy covering for the nuts.
