How to Grow and Care for Dwarf horsetail

Dwarf horsetail is distinguished by its delicate, wiry stature, typically reaching up to about 12 inches (30 cm) in height. It possesses slender, unbranched stalks characterized by their green color and curious zig-zag pattern, with conspicuously segmented joints. Each joint is encircled by a collar of tiny, dark, scale-like leaves. The thin stems feature distinctive black banding at these nodes. The plant's reproduction method includes the development of a spore-bearing cone atop fertile stems, which emerge in early to mid-summer, or spring if over-wintered. Dwarf horsetail forms a compact, evergreen mat, providing a fine-textured groundcover that can thrive in both sunny and shaded moist environments with sandy soils.
