How to Grow and Care for Gumweed

Curlycup gumweed (Grindelia squarrosa) is a small biennial plant native to North America. It’s also known as “Rosinweed,” “Resinweed,” “Sticky-Heads,” and “Tarweed.” Its Latin name comes from David Hieronymus Grindel, a Latvian botanist.

Puget sound gumweed (Grindelia integrifolia) is a perennial plant commonly found growing in salt marshes and meadows in North America's Pacific Northwest. It blooms in summer with yellow daisy-like blossoms of bright yellow ray and disc flowers. It provides late-season nectar and pollen for butterflies bees and other pollinators.

Goldenweed is an annual or biennial shrub that sometimes can reach the height of 1.5 m. It is recognizable by its leaves with spiny-toothed edges and daisy-like, bright yellow flowers. It grows in prairies and isolated areas of the central and southern United States.

Hairy gumplant (Grindelia hirsutula) has a name that’s a misnomer because it’s not gummy or hairy. This plant produces brilliant golden flowers late in summer. This means it starts attracting butterflies when many other flowering plants are done for the season.

Narrowleaf gumweed is a biennial or short-lived flowering perennial native to the south-central United States, but which was also introduced to nearby states just outside the native range. Its preferred habitats include rocky prairies, limestone glades, and bald knobs. The flowering occurs during summer, after which the entire plant dies.
