Impatiens arguta is a genus of more than 1,000 species of flowering plants, widely distributed throughout the Northern Hemisphere and the tropics. Plant size varies dependent of the species from five centimetres to 2.5 meters. Stems are often rooting when becoming in contact with the soil. The leaves are entire, often dentate or sinuate with extra floral nectaries. The zygomorph flowers of Impatiens are protandric. The calyx consists of five free sepals, of which one pair is oft strongly reduced. The non-paired sepal forms a flower spur producing nectar.

Impatiens arguta is a semi-shrubby perennial reaching heights of approximately 2 feet (60 cm) and spans 3 to 4 feet (90 to 120 cm) wide. It features delicate red stems that are adorned with mid-green, elliptic leaves, finely serrated along the edges and 1.5 inches (3.8 cm) in length. The plant is distinguished by its unique 2 inch (5 cm) long trumpet-shaped blooms, showcasing a mottled violet corolla, flaring violet petals, and a distinct orange-yellow speckled white throat. The blooms possess a peculiar, hook-shaped yellow spur and are suspended on slender petioles below the foliage, presenting themselves mostly within the interior of the plant.
