Yulan magnolia is a deciduous, multi-stemmed shrub or tree, standing at an impressive height and spread of about 30 to 40 feet (9 to 12 meters). This species is easily recognizable by its large, creamy-white flowers, with each bloom displaying 9 to 12 tepals and subtle hints of pink at the base. Another distinguishing characteristic is that the flowers possess fewer tepals compared to other species in the same genus. The leaves of yulan magnolia are dark green, obovate to oblong, and lighter beneath, with a slight pubescence. Following the floral display, yulan magnolia develops brownish cone-like fruits that contain bright red-coated seeds, maturing in late summer to early fall.
