Madagascar palm is a succulent that thrives in sunny conditions with well-draining soil. Madagascar palm is a robust, succulent shrub with a distinctive, spiny gray trunk that tapers at the base. Typically reaching heights of 4 to 6 feet (1.2 to 1.8 meters) in cultivation, this species can soar up to 20 feet (6 meters) in its natural setting. Its trunk is generally unbranched and is crowned with long, narrow leaves that measure 8 to 12 inches (20 to 30 centimeters). These leaves are a glossy dark green on the top and paler underneath. The large, aromatic flowers bloom in spring and summer, featuring white, twisted petals with a yellow base and measure 2 to 3 inches (5 to 7.5 centimeters) across. The formidable spines are approximately 1 to 2 inches (2.5 to 5 centimeters) long, arranged in groups of three.
