Common reed is a robust, tall perennial grass that typically stands about 6 to 13 feet (1.8 to 4 meters) high. Its broad, lance-shaped leaves can grow up to 1.5 inches (3.8 cm) in width and are often a grey-green hue. The stems are erect and sturdy, terminating in dense, feathery flower spikes during late summer. These flowering heads start purplish and mature to a tan or beige. Common reed possesses a vigorous rhizome system that allows it to form dense and expansive stands, capable of thriving in soggy soils and even submerged in standing water up to 3 feet (0.9 meters) deep.
