Chamber bitter presents as a mounding summer annual, reaching heights of 1 to 2 feet (30-60 cm), with a notable branching habit starting from its base. Its oblong leaves are relatively small, measuring 1/2 to 3/4 inch (about 1.3-1.9 cm) and borne on short branches that can mimic legume-like foliage. Unlike some relatives in its family, chamber bitter's stems do not release a milky sap when snapped. Almost hidden flowers bloom greenish-white and the plant is distinguished by distinctive round fruit set directly (sessile) on leaf axils underneath. The reproductive fruit are known to eject seeds over short distances.
