Japanese black pine is characterized by a tapestry of physical traits, typical of a rugged conifer. It stands at about 20 to 60 feet (6 to 18 meters) tall, with a breadth of 12 to 20 feet (3.7 to 6 meters). The tree's silhouette is notable for its flat-topped and wide, asymmetrical crown, which tends to lack a dominant central leader, giving it a striking, irregular profile. Pendulous branches contribute to its distinctive outline. The trunk, often curved, is adorned with black-gray bark that has a furrowed and scaly texture. Dark green needles, pointed and generally in pairs, add to the dense foliage, which is punctuated by conspicuous, silky, white buds resembling candles. These buds contrast sharply with the foliage and brownish-gray cones, the latter being plentiful and pivotal for identification.
