Chinese pistache is a resilient, medium-sized deciduous tree, typically reaching heights of 30 to 35 feet (9 to 10.5 meters) with a widespread umbrella-like canopy spanning 20 to 30 feet (6 to 9 meters). Its distinctive bark is grayish-brown with a scaly, peeling texture that reveals a striking salmon-colored underlayer. The leaves are dark green, compound, and pinnate, measuring 10 to 12 inches (25 to 30 centimeters) long with 10-12 slender leaflets that release a fragrance when bruised. The plant produces separate male and female flowers, with males forming dense clusters and females in looser arrays. In the fall, it bears red, rounded drupes about 0.25 inches (0.6 centimeters) in diameter that mature to a blue hue.
