How to Grow and Care for Common purslane

Common purslane, also known as Verdolaga, Pigweed, Little hogweed, Pursley, Wild portulaca, Garden purslane, Fatweed

Common purslane is known for its resilience and low-maintenance needs, thriving in warm temperatures and full sunlight. It requires well-draining soil and moderate watering, as overwatering can lead to root rot. Special care point includes its sensitivity to cold; therefore, it must be protected from frost. A notable aspect of common purslane is its ability to store water in its succulent leaves, which makes it drought-tolerant and reduces the frequency of watering needed.

Common purslane is characterized by its prostrate growth habit with smooth, reddish stems. This annual succulent has alternating, fleshy, oval-shaped leaves that gather at joint intersections and stem tips. Its diminutive yellow flowers, about 1/4 inch (around 6 mm) across, boast five heart-shaped petals and bloom primarily in the morning hours. Post-pollination, a seed capsule forms, eventually releasing dark brown to black seeds. Broken stems placed in soil can readily take root, further propagating common purslane.
