Wild coffee (Psychotria nervosa) is an evergreen shrub that attracts butterflies and insects. Wild coffee fruits resemble coffee beans, ripen in fall and provide food for a variety of birds. This species grows best in partial shade, but can grow in sun or shade. It is salt tolerant and commonly found growing in South Florida.
Wild coffee (Psychotria asiatica) is a shade-loving tropical shrub that grows underneath jungle trees. The common name wild coffee comes from this plant's red berries, which resemble those of the coffee plant. These berries are a good food source for fruit-eating animals. The epithet asiatica refers to this plant's Asian heritage.
Fujimoto crawls up and sticks to the base with attached roots. All stock hairless. There are nodes on the stem and the leaves are opposite. The cocoon leaves are 3 mm long and have an oval to oval shape with two small tips. The leaves are leather and fallen needle-shaped to egg-shaped oval 1.5 to 4 cm in length about 3 mm in width slightly sharp at the tip and the base gradually narrows to follow the petal pattern at 2 to 4 mm in length. The flowering season is from spring to summer with a cluster of inflorescences at the end of the branches and a large number of sparse flowers. Naraha is a very small and wide triangle. The spear is an inverted triangle with a length of 0.8 mm a width of 1.5 mm and a shallow tip that splits into five. The corolla is white and has a short funnel shape with white soft hair all over the inside of the tube and the tip is split into five each opening flat. Each piece is narrow oval 2 mm long slightly sharp at the tip and hairless on both sides. The berries are spherically oval 4 to 5 mm long with spear teeth remaining at the tip and become white when ripe. The seeds are oval 4 mm long with three ridges running vertically on the back.
