Black locust reaches a mature height of approximately 30 to 50 feet (9 to 15 meters) with a spread of 20 to 35 feet (6 to 10.5 meters). It features a sturdy trunk up to 3 to 4 feet (90 to 120 cm) in diameter. The bark is characteristically brown to gray, deeply furrowed, and scaly. Leaves are dark blue-green, alternate, and pinnately compound with up to 23 lanceolate or ovate leaflets. From April to June, it showcases fragrant white, pea-like flowers clustered 5 to 8 inches (13 to 20 cm) long. Following blooming, it produces smooth, flat, purple-brown seed pods that can measure up to 4 inches (10 cm) and may remain on the tree into winter.
