How to Grow and Care for Rose gentians

Widely known as the rosepink, the *Sabatia angularis* is a wildflower native to eastern North America. It can grow nearly 3 m tall, with rosepink-colored flowers on multi-branched flowering stems. It is cultivated ornamentally for these mid-summer blooms. The genus name, *Sabatia angularis*, was given in honor of the Italian botanist, Liberato Sabbati.

Meadow Pink (Sabatia campestris) blooms in spring with pink flowers. It thrives in full sun or partial shade in dry soils that are well drained. Blooms poorly or not at all under drought conditions, however. Seeds develop after flowering and ripen in fall.

Native to the eastern U.S., Sabatia stellaris is a salt-tolerant plant that grows in a wide range of habitats, including salty marshes. Rose of Plymouth is listed as endangered or threatened in some parts of the U.S. Its main threat is an invasive wetland plant called Phragmites australis.
