American elder is a multi-stemmed, deciduous shrub or a small tree that typically grows 5 to 12 feet (1.5 to 3.6 meters) tall and is usually wider than its height. Its bark is yellowish-gray to grayish-brown with a conspicuous white pith inside. The plant sports pinnately compound leaves, each having 5 to 11 leaflets (commonly 7), about 2 to 6 inches (5 to 15 centimeters) long and 0.5 to 2.5 inches (1.3 to 6.4 centimeters) wide, with sharply serrated edges. It features clusters of fragrant, creamy-white flowers and bears fruits that are purple-black drupes clustered together.
