How to Grow and Care for Coast redwood

Coast redwood, also known as California redwood, Redwood, Humboldt redwood

Coast redwood is a long-lived, evergreen tree that requires considerable space and a moist, temperate climate to thrive, making them difficult to care for outside their native habitat. Special care points include ensuring adequate water supply during dry periods and protection from strong winds. Soil composition is critical; coast redwood prefers slightly acidic soil rich in organic matter. Regular mulching can help replicate its natural forest floor environment.

Coast redwood rises majestically, reaching heights between 18 to over 61 meters (60 to 200+ feet) with a distinctive conical form that becomes more columnar with age. Its base is notable for a pronounced flare. Sporting thick, reddish-brown bark, deeply grooved, it adds a rugged texture to the massive trunk. The foliage consists of needle-like leaves, each 1.3 to 2.5 centimeters (0.5 to 1 inch) long, sharp-tipped, with a vivid green upper surface and two white bands beneath. The cones are compact at roughly 2.5 centimeters (1 inch) long, woody, and bear thick, wrinkled scales.
