Common dandelion is a robust, broadleaf perennial easily identified by its bright yellow, composite flowers which mature into puffball-like seed heads. This plant's foliage consists of deeply lobed, tooth-like leaves in a basal rosette, with each leaf approximately 5 to 25 centimeters (2 to 10 inches) long. Its hollow flower stems can rise 5 to 40 centimeters (2 to 15.7 inches) above the ground. Notably, common dandelion possesses a thick taproot capable of penetrating soil depths substantially, and exudes a characteristic milky latex when any part of the plant is broken.
