How to Grow and Care for Bald cypress

Bald cypress, also known as Swamp Cypress, Southern Bald Cypress, Tidewater Red Cypress, Common Bald Cypress

Bald cypress is generally easy to maintain, thriving in wet, swampy conditions. Particularly important for bald cypress is ensuring it has access to plenty of water, mimicking its natural habitat. Additionally, it's critical to provide bald cypress with full sun exposure, as this supports robust growth and foliage development. Avoiding overly dry environments is essential, as bald cypress's health directly corresponds to ample soil moisture and adequate sunlight.

Bald cypress is a deciduous conifer towering at 50 to 70 feet (15 to 21 meters) with a base spreading 3 to 6 feet (0.9 to 1.8 meters) as it matures. This tree has a youthful pyramidal shape that transitions to an irregular flat top in age. Its bark peels in long, reddish-brown strips on younger specimens. Foliage consists of narrow, flat leaves spiraling in two ranks around the stem. Male cones are pendulous and cluster in shades of yellow to brown, while female cones are round and sit on short stalks, changing from glaucous green to brown.
