How to Grow and Care for Arrowgrasses

Seaside arrowgrass (Triglochin maritima) is a grasslike plant that thrives in fresh and saltwater wetland habitats. It is much smaller than its close relative, Marsh Arrowgrass. This plant is potentially hazardous to livestock because, when there is a lack of moisture, the plant becomes toxic, producing hydrogen cyanide, which can poison grazing animals.

It is a perennial with parallel lines on its narrow linear leaves which gives rise to its common name streaked arrow grass.

Marsh arrow-grass is a popular aquatic grass in water gardens, easily identified by its long, thin blades that contain the lethal toxin hydrogen cyanide. The native plant is an endangered species in Illinois.
