How to Grow and Care for Sweet garlic

Sweet garlic

Sweet garlic is a resilient and low-maintenance plant, well-suited to gardens or containers. It thrives in well-draining soil and full sun to partial shade, requiring moderate watering to prevent root rot. Special care points include deadheading spent flowers to encourage new blooms and dividing clumps every few years to maintain vigor. Protecting sweet garlic from extreme cold is crucial as it favors milder climates.

Sweet garlic is an evergreen perennial reaching heights and widths of 1-2 feet (30-60 cm). It features clumps of grey-green, flat leaves resembling those of Agapanthus. From late winter to early spring, and sometimes into summer, it bears fragrant lavender-pink flowers. These tubular blooms are composed of six tepals and sport a prominent central crown, all arranged in umbels atop erect stems measuring 1-2 feet (30-60 cm) tall. The plant's deciduous crown is frost-hardy, withstanding brief dips to around 20° F (-6° C).
