How to Grow and Care for Giant ironweed

Giant ironweed, also known as Ironweed

Giant ironweed thrives in full sun to partial shade and requires well-draining soil, making it relatively low-maintenance. Regular watering is important, especially during dry spells, to support its tall growth and robust purple flowers. Pruning can encourage bushier structure and more blooms. Resilient to pests and typical diseases, giant ironweed could be an easy addition to native gardens.

Giant ironweed exhibits a stately presence with its tall erect stature, reaching heights between 3-12 feet (0.9-3.7 m). The hearty, rounded, green stem supports dark green leaves, which range in shape from ovate to elliptical, up to 9 inches (23 cm) in length and 2.5 inches (6.4 cm) wide, featuring serrated edges. Come late summer to early fall, giant ironweed boasts a striking flat-headed panicle up to 16 inches (41 cm) wide, densely packed with 10-30 tubular florets each, in shades of lavender, magenta, or deep purple. The resulting fruits are gray to brown achenes adorned with both short and long bristly hairs, aiding in their wind-driven dispersal.
