How to Grow and Care for Cardboard palm

Cardboard palm, also known as Cardboard cycad, Mexican cycad, Cardboard sago, Cardboard plant, Zamia palm

Cardboard palm is characterized by its resilience and minimal maintenance needs, making it an easy care plant. Key care requirements include well-draining soil and low to moderate watering, as cardboard palm is drought-tolerant. Special attention should be given to lighting – it thrives in bright, indirect light and can tolerate direct sunlight. Overwatering is a common pitfall and should be avoided to prevent root rot, which is crucial for maintaining plant health.

Cardboard palm is characterized by its underground or barely visible trunk and an expansive crown of rigid leaves that reach 3-4 feet (91-122 cm) in height and 2-4 feet (61-122 cm) in diameter. Each leaf radiates from the plant's center on tall stalks, comprising 13 pairs of oval leaflets with distinctive rolled-under edges. The leaflets feature a notable cardboard-like texture. Reproductively, cardboard palm exhibits sexual dimorphism, yielding egg-shaped cones on female plants and smaller cones clustered on males. In addition, the female plant produces numerous bright red seeds that are toxic upon consumption.
