How to Propagate Lychee?
(Litchi chinensis)
Lychee, also known as Litchi
Lychee is a tropical fruit tree valued for its sweet, fragrant fruit. Its cultivation typically involves grafting, which ensures the consistency of fruit quality. For successful grafting, one must select healthy scion wood—an actively growing branch tip—and rootstock that's disease-free. The grafting cut should be clean and precise to promote effective union and avoid pathogen entry. After the graft union has healed, it's critical to provide lychee with appropriate care, including watering, fertilization, and pest management, to support the development of a robust and productive tree.

What Is the Best Time To Propagate Lychee?

Propagation Type
Grafting
Propagation Season
Spring,Winter
The best time to propagate lychee is during early spring or late winter, primarily through grafting. These periods offer optimal temperatures and sufficient light, enhancing the graft's survival and integration rates. The cooler, stable weather of late winter aids the healing process, while early spring supports vigorous growth as temperatures rise.

What Tools Are Used in Lychee Propagation?

Grafting Knife
A grafting knife is essential for making precise cuts on the scion and rootstock of lychee. Its sharp, thin blade ensures clean cuts, minimizing damage and improving the chances of successful graft union. This tool is particularly beneficial due to the delicacy required when handling the soft tissues of lychee.
Grafting Tape
This flexible tape is used to securely bind the graft joint of lychee, maintaining the alignment of the scion to the rootstock during the healing process. It provides a moisture barrier, which is crucial for preventing desiccation at the graft site and promoting successful tissue fusion.
Rooting Hormone
Although primarily used for grafting, a rooting hormone can enhance the growth and development of the scion's tissues in lychee. By applying it to the cut end of the scion, it promotes quicker tissue healing and integration, significantly boosting the success rate of the graft.
Pruning Shears
Used for preparing the rootstock of lychee before grafting, these shears make clean and sharp cuts, essential for proper graft alignment and fusion. The precision and ability to produce smooth cuts reduce the possibility of disease and improve graft success.
Sterilizing Solution
Important for cleaning all tools before and after use to prevent the transmission of diseases in lychee. Proper sterilization ensures that the cuts made during grafting are clean and free from pathogens, which is vital for the overall health and viability of lychee during and after the propagation process.

Propagation Type
Moderately Difficult
Selection and Preparation
Choose a healthy donor lychee tree that has desirable fruiting qualities. Collect semi-hardwood cuttings that are about 6 to 12 inches in length and contain several leaf nodes. Trim the cutting just below a node, and remove leaves from the lower two-thirds to reduce moisture loss.
Rootstock Preparation
Select a young, healthy rootstock plant of lychee or close relatives suitable for grafting. Cut the top off the rootstock to expose fresh, living tissue where the graft will be attached.
Grafting Technique
Employ a cleft or wedge grafting method. Make a vertical cut in the center of the rootstock’s exposed section, creating a cleft. Prepare the cutting by shaping the base into a wedge that fits snugly into the cleft of the rootstock.
Securing the Graft
Insert the prepared cutting into the cleft of the rootstock. Ensure good contact between the cambium layers of both the cutting and the rootstock. Secure the graft with grafting tape or a similar material to hold the cutting in place while the graft heals.
Healing and Care
Place the grafted lychee plant in a humid, sheltered environment, and keep the soil consistently moist. Protect the graft from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. The graft should heal and begin to grow within a few weeks to a few months, depending on conditions.

How to Care for Your Newly Propagated Lychee?

After the graft has successfully taken and new growth is evident, transition the lychee plant to conditions similar to its natural habitat. Lychee prefers well-draining, slightly acidic soil, and full sun exposure. Water the plant regularly to maintain soil moisture without waterlogging. Implement a balanced fertilizer regimen during the growing season. Prune lychee to maintain structure and encourage fruit production, ensuring that the plant receives ample airflow and sunlight penetration throughout the canopy.

Common Mistakes to Avoid When Propagating Lychee

Overwatering cuttings
Excessive moisture can lead to rot, particularly in the delicate stage of root development, creating an environment susceptible to fungal infections.
Improper cuttings selection
Using non-viable or diseased parts of lychee for propagation will likely result in poor or no root development.
Neglecting hygiene
Tools and containers must be sterilized before use to prevent the spread of disease to the propagating lychee.
Ignoring humidity requirements
Failure to provide a high-humidity environment for lychee's cuttings can lead to desiccation and poor root formation.
Overlooking potting medium
Using an incorrect substrate that doesn't provide adequate drainage and aeration can hinder the rooting process of lychee.

Tips For Propagating Lychee

Optimal cutting selection
Choose healthy, disease-free semi-hardwood sections from lychee that are about 4-6 inches in length with at least three sets of leaves.
Rooting hormones application
Dip the base of lychee's cuttings in a rooting hormone to promote root growth and enhance the chances of successful propagation.
Adequate watering
Maintain evenly moist but not soggy soil to support the initial stages of lychee's root development without causing root rot.
Humidity control
Enclose the cuttings of lychee in a plastic bag or use a humidity dome to retain moisture and create a mini-greenhouse effect.
Proper medium preparation
Employ a sterile, well-draining potting mix to support the health and growth of lychee's cuttings.
