How to identify African cycas (Cycas thouarsii)
African cycas is distinguished by a robust trunk and an impressive crown of long leaves that can reach lengths of 5+ feet (1.5+ meters) by 1-2 feet (30-60 cm) in width. Upon emergence, the leaves bear a bluish hue, maturing to a deep, glossy green. Each leaf comprises 60-70 pairs of slender leaflets, which are paler on the underside and display downturned margins. The overall height of the plant can range from 4-8 feet (1.2-2.4 meters) in non-tropical areas to 10-30 feet (3-9 meters) in optimal tropical conditions.
