How to identify Dwarf striped umbrella sedge (Cyperus albostriatus)
Dwarf striped umbrella sedge is an evergreen sedge that showcases tufts of basal leaves. From these grow stems reaching up to 1 1/2 feet (45 cm) tall, which are crowned by broad, leaf-like bracts. These bracts, approximately 1 inch (2.5 cm) wide and 4 inches (10 cm) long, radiate outward in a spiral, arching slightly to create a dense, umbrella-like canopy. Below the bracts, short sprays of delicate green flowers bloom nearly year-round. The plant's sturdy structure enables it to spread, but it is manageable through mechanical trimming.
