How to identify Golden oats (Stipa gigantea)
Golden oats, also known as Spanish oats, Giant needle grass
Golden oats is characterized by its evergreen, densely mounding form that reaches nearly 2 feet (60 cm) in height. This grass displays narrow, arching, gray-green leaves creating a lush base. Come spring to early summer, it boasts erect flower spikes which can add another 4 feet (1.2 meters) in height, crowned with striking 10-inch (25 cm) long panicles. These feature long-awned, initially purplish flowers that transition to a rich wheat color. The feathery blooms capture and play with light, creating movement with the slightest breeze.
