How to identify Graceful cattail (Typha laxmannii)
Graceful cattail is an aquatic perennial with a distinctive structure, featuring narrow, vertically aligned, sword-like leaves reaching heights of up to 5 feet (150 cm). The leaves are basal and green, radiating around a central, stout flower stalk. In the summer, it blooms with separated yellowish male and greenish female flowers on the same stalk, divided by a 2-inch (5 cm) gap of bare stem. Following pollination, the female flowers develop into a brownish, sausage-shaped fruiting spike, about 4 inches (10 cm) long, visible till early winter. Autumn sees the foliage transition to a yellow-brown color.
