Is Colorado blue columbine toxic to humans?
Colorado blue columbine is not confirmed as a toxic species. However, since it is in the same family as some other mildly toxic species, caution is advised around any part of the plant, and illness may occur due to ingestion. Other Aquilegia species are known to cause mild to moderate illness, including symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, and heart palpitations when any part of the plant (leaves, stem, and flowers) is eaten. Colorado blue columbine is commonly encountered in western North America in aspen groves, higher elevations in the Rocky Mountains, and near streams in open woodlands.
