Is Mead's milkweed toxic to humans?
Mead's milkweed can cause poisoning if it is ingested or comes into contact with the skin. The level of urgency can range from mild to severe and even death. All parts of the plant are toxic with the highest concentration of cardiac glycosides being in the sap. The leaves, stems and roots have lower concentrations. Symptoms of ingesting the plant are seen within a few hours. They include stomach upset, abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, weakness, confusion and lethargy. Ingesting large amounts can cause respiratory paralysis and coma. Skin and eye irritation will occur through contact with the sap.
