Is Green milkweed toxic to humans?
Green milkweed is a toxic plant when ingested due to its content of cardiac glycosides. These toxic compounds alter the heart rate, so can have serious consequences, particularly if large amounts of green milkweed are ingested. The effects differ in severity based on the ingester's age, weight, individual susceptibility, and general physical health. Children are most likely to suffer negative effects because they are the most curious, and also are the smallest in weight. If the sap from green milkweed touches the skin directly, dermatitis can follow, which may mean the affected area goes red, itchy, becomes inflamed, or forms blisters.
