Is Common bamboo toxic to humans?
As a *Bambusa*, or bamboo plant, common bamboo is probably toxic if ingested without proper preparation. Fresh bamboo can induce severe symptoms when eaten and can even lead to death if eaten in high-enough amounts, due to the cyanide taxiphyllin contained in the plant. All parts may be toxic, but the shoots are especially prone to be toxic. Symptoms of consuming these plant parts are nausea, weakness, headache, difficulty breathing, and disorientation. More severe symptoms include unconsciousness, seizures, and cardiac arrest. Some who harvest and cook fresh bamboo shoots may incorrectly prepare them and experience these negative reactions.
