Is Creeping barberry toxic to humans?
Creeping barberry contains berberine, a toxic chemical, in all of its parts other than the ripe berries, which makes it harmful to consume for pregnant and breastfeeding women. Berberine poisoning can cause harm to a developing or newborn infant, so it's best to avoid consumption at all costs. High doses of berberine may cause diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, kidney inflammation, jaundice, liver toxicity, and allergic reactions. Irritation, including a rash, can occur as a result of direct contact made between this plant and the skin.
