Is Autumn crocus toxic to humans?

Autumn crocus is a seriously toxic plant. All parts of the plant, including the stem, leaves, seeds, and flowers are poisonous. The plant contains toxic alkaloids that include colchicine. The chemical interferes with cell mitosis which can negatively affect overall health. Eating any part of the plant can produce mild to severe side effects. Burning sensations in the mouth and throat are minor, along with abdominal discomfort. Severe symptoms include blood disorders, liver, and kidney problems, organ failure, and eventual death. Poisoning most often occurs when the bulbs are mistaken for onions.

The plant contains colchicine, which can cause the following symptoms when ingested by a cat: diarrhea, shock, multi-organ damage, bloody vomiting, and eventually death. All parts of the plant are poisonous, so if you suspect your cat ingested this plant call your veterinarian immediately.

Is Autumn crocus toxic to dog?

Autumn crocus is extremely toxic to dogs. You should seek treatment for your dog immediately if you think any part of this plant was eaten. All parts contain harmful alkaloids, with the highest concentrations in the flowers and seeds. Symptoms of autumn crocus ingestion include vomiting and diarrhea (often with blood) and weakness.
