Is Texas lantana toxic to humans?
The purple berries of texas lantana are known to be highly toxic to humans when ingested. These plants contain triterpene acids, toxic compounds that, when consumed, may cause vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain in less severe cases, and shortness of breath, conjunctivitis, rapidly increased heart rate, and sun sensitivity when large amounts are consumed, or when the plant is burnt and the smoke is breathed in. Poisoning through ingestion typically occurs in children, as they are intrigued by the bright, attractive look of the berries.
