Is Shame plant toxic to humans?
The shame plant isn't much of a danger to humans, as its toxin, mimosine, exists in low amounts in its tissues, and most children won't do more than nibble on it. Unfortunately, the shame plant has become an invasive weed in some areas, so depending on your climate it can creep into your yard without your noticing. If a child or cognitively impaired person eats enough of it, they will experience mimosine poisoning. Symptoms include weakness, hair loss, goiter, and loss of appetite. Symptoms will usually go away by themselves as soon as the victim is prevented from eating any more of the plant.
