Is Pelargoniums toxic to humans?

The genus Pelargonium includes some of the most popular houseplants in the world. However, they contain compounds that are mildly toxic, especially to dogs and cats.

Is Pelargoniums toxic to cat?

Cats should be prevented from chewing on the mildly toxic pelargoniums. All parts of the plant contain the essential oils linaool and geranoil. Typically, the cat will only eat a little of the plant before nausea sets in. But if your cat does eat more of the plant, symptoms can include vomiting, diarrhea, and muscle weakness. Cats usually recover fully but it's a good idea to contact your veterinarian for advice on how to handle the situation.

Is Pelargoniums toxic to dog?

Most plants of the Pelargonium genus are mildly toxic to dogs. Toxicity varies somewhat from species to species, with some being essentially harmless and others causing more severe reactions. Most contain geraniol and linalool, and these compounds are usually found throughout all parts of the pelargoniums. Ingesting these toxins may cause vomiting, diarrhea, a loss of appetite, or dermatitis.
